Our Solar System hosts four Giant planets: two “Gas Giants”, Jupiter and Saturn, and two “ice Giants”, Uranus and Neptune. Each of these planets is in fact a “small solar system in the big one”, with a diverse family of bodies (small irregular and large regular satellites, rings, gas and plasma tori, a magnetosphere and polar aurorae) which follow the central planet in its course around the Sun. The lessons we learn today, and will learn even better tomorrow, from their exploration by our space probes are extremely rich. They can be extrapolated to provide us with a better understanding of the Solar System as a whole, and also of the more than 500 (exo)planetary systems that have already been discovered around stars other than the Sun.
Just nine months after the end of in-orbit operations of the NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission to the Saturn System, I will present to the Beijing public some of the unique discoveries about the “Lord of the Rings” that this outstanding mission has brought to us. The lessons from Cassini are going to play a major role in preparing for the next target of the exploration of giant planets: Jupiter and the Jupiter System.
I will first talk about the scientific objectives of the space missions that are now operating at Jupiter (JUNO) or which are already planned to go to Jupiter in the next decade (JUICE of ESA and Europa Clipper of NASA): how was the body of Jupiter formed and how is it inside? How does it work? Does it host habitable worlds? I will then talk about the next logical steps in the exploration of the Jupiter system: one future mission should focus on searching for traces of life at Europa; another very important one should search for the Origin and formation scenario of the Jupiter system.
